I was pretty happy with my '86. Just make sure it's the 16valve engine. I know it was for the turbo, just not sure for the S.
Eric makes good points. The front brakes are a little tricky, but that won't change until '88. The headlights don't look as cool as the later cars, but they are MUCH cheaper, and if they cloud up, you replace them. After '86 the cars started to move a little more upmarket, so if you're looking for simple, the '86 is nice. If it has a sunroof, it's manual. I like that. No, it doesn't tilt, twirl, or spin, but it does work reliably.
It doesn't have ABS. I like ABS, but would start to worry about repair costs in an older (near 15 years) car. Brakes worked pretty good anyway.
I can't think of two many things that came as 'improvements'. You can always put in an updated chain tensioner yourself for $50. I never had wiring problems - make sure the heat shield is OK, and you should be OK.
Good luck!
