More like a bad ground any where. I'd start in the engine compartment. Some shitty signal is going to the ECU.

I had a similar issues (no blinnking light), but my car coughed violently for no apparent reason. After months of ground cleaning- I sucked it up and brought it to a dealer (ugh! But I was defeated)- turned out to be the positive cable from battery to the alt. Mech told me the heat of the turbo cooks the cable inside. $79 later- zoom zoom.
