Alternator gets weaker after running longer?

I've been having weak battery-like symptoms so Ive been probing around a bit lately with my new DMM. I actually started by having the battery and charging system tested at a parts store . They check out OK , but not optimal. Unsatisfied, I pressed on.
The battery is just 8 months old and I replaced the Voltage regulator 2 months ago for similar weak battery-like symptoms which did in fact disappear until recently. The IP idiot battery light does come on...most of the time and has the proper bulb. I added a ground wire because it was easy.
The first time I tested the alternator, I read 13.94 at the D+ and 13.57 at the B+ (output) terminal. Nothing too alarming here, but after running the car a bit I retested. Seems it got worse after running longer. This time I got 13.66 at the D+ and 12.70 at the B+ (output) terminal...also 12.70 at the battery terminals. This isn't good right?
Driving back home I noticed a groaning sound that only lasts a half second or so as I start from a stop. Altenator making noise? I could not reproduce it in park in the drive way.
