How to tell if AC compressor is new

I (supposedly) had a new AC compressor put in my 89 900S last year (by an independent mechanic). Now I find out from another mechanic (not associated with the first one) that there is a leak in this compressor. How can I tell whether it is actually a *new* compressor? Is there a serial number I can have my new mechanic look for? He has the car right now, and says it looks to have been changed because it is a different color than the original compressor. Which makes me wonder, could the other guy have just painted the original??? I hate to think this way, but I have since learned that other work he charged me for was not actually (or properly) done. Is it common for a new compressor to leak so soon?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice.
