The fuel pressure regulator (FPR)'s internal diaphragm can rupture, I'm told, causing fuel to be drawn in through the vacuum hose attached to FPR into engine (via intake manifold), and creating a drastically rich mixture. Find this vacuum hose (the SMALLEST diameter hose attached to the FPR) and pull it off. If there's fuel inside the vacuum hose, that's BAD, and you have a ruptured FPR for sure.
Hope it's that FPR and not a bad AMM ($$$!).
For a quick view of the engine bay including that FPR, I've linked my little webpage on it (though my photo is of a '90 900, non-turbo, LH 2.4). But FPR should look similar.
Hope this helps!
