There isn't enough room above the cupholder to accommodate cups larger than a few ounces. Only way to use it is to move stereo to lower slot.
A decent, German-made cupholder can be had for $13 @ gowesty.com, which sells VW camper stuff online. The exact same thing can also be had for $17 at GriotsGarage.com, or even as high as $40 on various other car sites.
Here's Griots' description:
"GERMAN ENGINEERED CUP HOLDER
This cool Cup Holder opens with a one-hand movement and automatically adjusts to fit all types of cups, glasses and bottles. Will hold 12 fluid-ounce cans to 1 liter water bottles. Not some cheesy add-on, but nicely made in Germany. In fact, it's the same cup holder as in the Mercedes 500SL. When folded, measures 4 3/4"l x 4"w x 1 1/2"h. Finally, a quality cup holder for my older car."
btw, gowesty sells two types: you want p/n #CUP-001
