o2 sensor diagnostics

I know this has been discussed quite a bit and have spent the last hour going through searches but I'm still not clear on o2 sensor diagnostics. The problem I have is a 89 900NA that hesitates during acceleration. Complete tune up has been done recently. I have never changed the o2 sensor and have had the car for 7 years, 75k miles. So I figured I would check it according to the Bentley.
With black wire disconnected got about 0.9V in the beginning and close to OV when engine fully warmed up. With black wire connected, was going between 0.2 and 0.8V as supposed. When disconnecting FPR hose got higher readings and when taking oil cap off went close to 0V. So it looks like the sensor is working. On the other hand, quite a few people have noticed improved mileage after replacement. For $40 would not be that expense, especially if I can avoid Monster's adventures. Should I do it? What's the expert's opinions?
