Something is screwy (but you knew that :) and the problems are probably unrelated. Cold weather can have a negative effect on shift quality. You can often fix this little issue by switching lubricants in the transmission. There are two completely different but equally acceptable lubes for the Saab tranny - you can use straight-up motor oil or gear oil, but you can't mix the two. In my experience, motor oil does a perfectly adequate job in the tranny, but suffers in cold weather. As a result, I run gear oil in all my c900s of one type or another. Synthetic gear oil, regular gear oil, or some of the newer types of synthetics like Redline MTL - lots of people on this BBS have had great success with Honda's "house brand" MTF as well. I'm betting that switching to one of these - especially Redline MTl - will probably have a positive affect on your cold-weather shifting.

As for the slipping, the only real culprit is the clutch. Strange that 10k would kill it... Saab's strategically placed clutches (from a cooling perspective...) tend to last quite a while, so I can't even imagine what would cause it to fail that early on. On the upside, a profeessionally-done clutch replacement on a c900 should run less the $400 assuming a $60/hour labor rate. Even better, doing the clutch in the comfort of your own heated garage is doable even for a novice with little more than basic hand tools. In that case, you're only liable for the parts which, as Jim pointed out, run less than $200 and yes, that does include a new slave cylinder.

And don't sweat the brakes. On an '88, it takes 30 minutes per corner to swap pads and only a little longer if you need to change rotors as well. In this case, the only thing you need is a good socket set, a c-clamp or similar to retract the pistons, and one oddball-sized allen key, whose exact size I've forgotten (4.5mm? 5mm? Something like that) but someone here can probably point out.
