the air mass meter is very delicate and any roughness in changing the air filter could harm it, its located right on top of the air box. There is a wire going to it.
I belive one way to check it is to disconect the AMM from the filter box, and leave it hooked up to the rubber intake, start the car, run it up to normal temprature, hold the Revs to around 2500rpm and then shut the car off, quickly look at the small filiment in the AMM and it should be glowing orange, if not, its broken.
another way to check it would be to check the resistance accross the meter using an Ohm meter. im not sure what the value is supposed to be
yet another thing you could do is unhook the wires from the AMM and run the car, if it makes a difference in the way the car is preforming now, then its probably not the AMM. if it is the same as before, the AMM might be bad.
