If you are talking about the play and not the tall shifter action (ie. wanting a short shifter) read on:

There is a nylon bushing where the shift linkage bar (the bar with the metal hoop on one end) leaves the shifter housing. On my 91 900S this bushing was worn out, causing play in the shifter. ~$3 part. The problem is those damn three-sided security nuts on the shifter housing. Cut an 11mm(?) socket with a Dremel tool. Search for three-sided nuts/shifter housing special tool for instructions. Also, you must remove center console, carpeting, heat ducts etc. You should also follow the Bently procedure for adjusting your shifting while your at it.

My shifting was much improved after this-though I'm still thinking about a short shifter for other reasons.
