For years I have been installing the long studs because of the reason you mention. And have been very disappointed when the car shows up within a year and the gasket have started to creep out in the back ( toward the timing chain )

I have always thought the gasket crept out because of under tightened nuts from factory or broken studs, but now, since I know I used new factory studs ,seated them firmly into head and tightened the nuts accordingly. The gasket still blows out in less than a year. And that is not acceptable for me.

So for the last year I have installed the shorter studs all around, (have you ever seen the short ones break ?) and so far haven't had any problems.

The engines here in LA ,CA runs sooo freaking hot because of all the stop and go traffic in 90- 100 degrees summertime, so the long studs expands too much allowing the manifold to loosen its pressure on the exhaust gasket and allow it to move a little bit every day.

By using the short ones, I hope the expansion is gonna be less but still within what the manifold can take.

Have you ever seen a cracked 16V exhaust manifold, I haven't.
But if you ask me about the 8V turbo manifold, I haven't seen an uncracked one, but that is mostly because of the heatsheild/air preheatertube attachment.

And also I do check for warpage on the manifold/gasket surface and have seen none on the 16V.

Also as we all know, this is only a problem on the turbo engines, I have not seen NA engines with broken studs or blown gaskets, nor do I have to replace the studs on an NA engine.
