89,900T Clutch question...

Basically, I had a totally working car (900T, '89). Then, I went away for a month, came back, and started to drive my car again and when I put it in gear and gently took my foot off the clutch, the car lurched forward. I tried reverse (it went into reverse fine), and the same thing happened. I got it out of my parking place, assuming it was something "warm-up" related, but it lurched so badly that it actually stalled. I really HAD to get where I was going, so I decided (probably bad judgement ... I know ...) to force it, and it went along fine, but most of the time the clutch felt like it clicked under my foot at a certain point (half way up?) upon lifting it up. Like, it kind of pops into gear or something, rather than gradually going in.
Any ideas? Any hope that I won't have to sell my first born to afford to fix this?
THANKS!
