That's the oil cooler thermostat. It's supposed to keep the tranny fluid circulating internal to the tranny until it gets warm, then opens flow out to the oil cooler.
These babies are a PITA. As you can tell, they leak. I'm not that familiar with the 900 version, but I'll bet it's pretty much the same as the 9000 one. At one end there is a cylindrical plate a couple of inches in diameter held in with a circlip- that has an O-ring that leaks.
There are a few solutions. One would be to drain the system, pop out the circlip, and go down to the local autoparts store and HOPE to find a replacement O-ring. The next solution is to get a new thermostat (BAD idea). The best solution is to eliminate the thermostat. You can plumb the tranny straight to the cooler. I don't know about the 900, but for the 9000, Saab sells a kit just for that purpose, and it costs LESS than a new thermostat. On the 9000, there is a service bulletin on how to remove the thermostat - it was a pain on the earlier cars, and Saab eliminated it on later cars - so it isn't needed. Another possiblity is to get an automotive shop to fabricate some hoses for you.
Good luck!
