I've felt that it's to get the tensioner filled and pumped up. I've generally disregarded the advice though w/o problems. The mainshaft is pretty much immersed in oil at the full mark and at idle, I doubt there's sufficient load on the bearing sleeve to be an issue. It's hardly the same situation as in a pressure-lubed shell bearing like a crankshaft or rod bearing where brief starvation is disaster. I would avoid filling immediately prior to start-up unless adding through the clutch cover also, though, as it takes a while for oil to flow into the primary case through the few, restricted openings. I'm not saying you are wrong and you offer plently of sound advice but I would lean towards prior damage from the original failure as the cause. When the gears are tough to get off the shaft, there's usually damage on the various surfaces. It's easy to miss it sometimes.
