I think the shock of hitting the reset button can crack the plastic gears. One the gear is cracked it will spin on the shaft, sometimes intermittently. I noticed the old output for the mechanical oxygen sensor counter added quite a bit of resistance for the same gear. So, I ground the teeth off the output gear to hopefully keep my replacement speedometer/odometer working for a long time. I've heard of people using a small amount of super glue to fix the crack. I didn't try it and you would have to be very careful you didn't glue the gears together. If the speedo works you know your cable is still attached.
