With low refrigerant pressure you should see a river of motion through the dryer mini window, however, you need the compressor running to do so. According to what I've read on here, if low pressure is suspect and the compressor won't kick on, jumper the two leads connected to the dryer/receiver while the AC switch is depressed.
Didn't see you mention checking/cleaning the single red power lead connected to the compressor.
Also, as far as the R234 leaking out - if so, you would see an oil accumulation at the point of the leak. At a fitting, say. When I refit my car's AC with R134A, for the next few days I checked all the (very clean) connections with a clean blue shop towel which reveals any bit of oil it touches. So far so good.
