Finally installed MSS header! Posted by ryan [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Well I got the header back from a shop that specializes in ceramic coatings, (Cermachrome) for my '87 8 valve. I started by taking off the manifold and downpipe, and the power steering pump, and the mounting bracket for it as well (happens to be an integral part of the right motor mount). I tried putting the header on, but I had to completely remove the a-arm for the motor mount so that I could get clearance. it just takes a couple of tries to get the header in, since it has other clearance problems, but it goes in. The only thing that really takes time though is modifying the upper part of the motor mount (the PS pump mount) in order for it to clear the header. I used a sawzall to take off the big part of it (you'd know what I'm talking about if you ever try this), and then I spent about 45 minutes on and off the bench grinder taking little by little off so that it would fit. After this, it's pretty much a piece of cake, just tighten everything up and your off. But remember to retorque everthing after you've ran the car a couple days. One thing that saab did well were the manifold studs. They came off just like that, with barely any effort whatsoever (i was surprised). Oh yeah, one more important thing, you'll need to modify the dipstick to attach to the header; I'm still trying to figure it out. They welded a fitting on there, but I can't get it to match up. Altogether a great investment though!!!
BTW, my engine compartment looks absolutely awesome now (header, trunk mounted battery, no a/c, magnecore wires w/ protective sleeves, and none of that shit to make the car warmup better)
