You're going to have to replace the clutch anyway, whether you rebuild the transmission or not. It's a little easier to do if the engine is out of the car, but if you're trying to avoid a rebuild, then why not keep your fingers crossed and do the clutch first, and see if it helps? Also look at the other end of the transmission. Remove that rubber bushing in the shift linkage right next to the transmission. See if the metal is starting to separate from the rubber. Replacing that can improve shifting if it's getting worn, because the shift rod won't stay aligned properly when you put pressure on the shifter. Worked for me. I did those things and it's driving very well now. I was told by 2 dealers that the transmission was shot and needed to be replaced. Also, change the tranny fluid while you're at it.
