Spent a day this past weekend casing new prospects. A 1991 900S in one yard was severely damaged from a collision on the right front. The entire front end was pushed in and up, buckling up into the roof. If there was a passenger, that person surely died. The driver was probably saved by the airbag. I'll guess a collision with a truck or an SUV. To my surprise, the entire engine had been removed. A guy working on the rear end at the time said that someone had taken it as soon as it appeared in the yard. Amazing that it wasn't damaged, given the extent of the buckled front end.
The guy working on the rear (removing the rear hub and bearing assemblies) told me his SAAB tale of woe: He'd been hearing a howling for weeks, assuming it was one of the front wheel bearings, or perhaps the drive shaft bearings. He replaced the front bearings, then the drive shaft bearings, yet still had the noise. He then took it to several SAAB specialists who told him it was either the front wheel bearings or the inner drivers. Then he had a friend drive him around while he sat in the front and back seats to listen. Turns out the right rear bearings were the cause of the noise! So much for specialist advice!
The same guy also pulled a used Audi 5 cylinder head gasket that he said he was going to sell on EBay. I was quite surprised to hear that. I tried reasoning with him about why a used head gasket is a bad purchase, but he argued (Armenians are good at arguing) that it was fine. Perhaps in the former Soviet Union where a replacement head gasket may have been hard to come by, but here in the US? Once a black market operative, always an operative.
