I replaced the ones on my '91 900 in about an hour. It wasn't hard at all. The key trick is to NOT remove the big long bolt holding the alternator to its bracket, but instead, remove the two accessible hex head bolts that hold the alternator's bracket to the engine, then twist the alternator forward and down on the one remaining hex-head bolt that is still holding the bracket to the engine.
Once the alternator is twisted down, you can remove the long bolt, and the alternator comes right out.
Another trick... remove the oil filter housing (really easy... only a few bolts) and set the housing with filter still attached aside. This provides a lot of clearance so you can get the alternator out.
Once you have the alternator bracket out, drive the bushings out using the long bolt. Put it through the bushing with a washer pushing against the bushing, then tap the old bushing out. Really easy.
Then to get the new bushing in, wet it with soapy water, and reverse the bolt/washer and tap it in. Not hard at all.
Also, make sure you replace the alternator arm bushing. This also gets torn up over time.
Now the alternator doesn't shake, and I feel less vibration from the engine.
