Freshening this short block is not a biggie. This block will handle a 1mm overbore (roughly .040 over). The most popular oversize for SAABs in my experience is .5mm (roughly .020). Why? Because most any cylinder wall problems can be cleaned with a .5mm overbore so they are the most popular.
Use only forged Mahle pistons. They come with some nice long-wearing rings already fitted and are the best replacements. Most SAABs are fitted with Mahle pistons from the factory. Beautiful forgings.
Vandervell makes a fine long-wearing bearing for this engine. They're a little harder than the stock ones but will never wear out in a motor getting regular oil changes. Your machinist can supply you with them.
Have the motor rebalanced after the heavier overbore pistons are fitted to the rods. A good balance job makes the motor so smooth, it disappears at certain rpms.
Pistons and bearings are still available. A good machinist will have a few rods laying around if you need one (rebalancing necessary). When I lived in CT, my old machinist sold me a set of Vandervell rod and main bearings for my SAAB, plus had a spare rod as well. I bought the pistons from a certain mechanic in North Carolina through my knowledgeable independent SAAB parts man.
my machinist then bored and triple-honed the cylinder walls using a computer controlled Sunnen honing machine to a satin finish. Cylinder sealing and oil control were excellent. Everything was re-balanced and ran beautifully.
I think the dashboard fix is more problemmatical than the short block :)
