I've never heard of R-12 wearing out. Contaminated, yes, in the event of a compressor or filter failure. Thats why recycle machines work, they filter it and remove any moisture (which is slow death to a system) just like the filter/drier in the car, only bigger.
The SAAB low pressure switch is on the high pressure side, so if the switch allows the system to come on it should stay on as the pressure is lots higher during operation. The pressure during non-operation will change depending on outside air temperature, so there is a better chance of an under charged system coming on when its warm out or after the engine warms it up.
The real question is "Where's the Leak?" Check the hose crimps carefully on both ends of the lines running to the compressor. The normal movement of the engine causes them to come loose with time and the hoses get hard and brittle. The only cure for that is new hoses.
