sometime this summer.
In case G05 coolant's a mystery, it is Mercedes label coolant (ext. life).
In Europe, it's made by BASF and is called Glysantin G05.
In the US, it's made by Valvoline and called Zerex Glysantin G05.
Now, for Saabs. The Saab labeled coolant is G48, also a Valvoline Zerex grade, which is virtually identical to G05. It's also OEM label for Porsche, BMW, Audi and Volvo, except the Volvo is dyed green instead of blue. Problem with G48 is there are no plans to market
it at mass retail; autozone, walmart etc.
The G05's a different story. It was approved by Ford last year and Daimler-Chrysler 3 years ago, so it's expected to be popular enough to sit side by side with Dexcool on the mass retailers' shelves.
Both G48 and G05 are 3-yr extended life coolants, with no phosphates and low-silicates (250-300 ppm).
Anyone interested can see the full pdf specsheets for both at http://www.valvoline-technology.com
I was able to get this info after deciding to look for the same spec coolant in a Mercedes as the Mercedes brand, without driving to the dealer 60 miles away.
3 days of internet searches and calls to valvoline coolant chemists later, and I was able to verify all of above. I was satisfied enough that my Saab garage ordered a 55 gal. drum of the G05 and this Sat., I flushed out the dexcool I was running in my SPG and switched to G05. I wanted him to get the G48 but the distributor had a hard time getting it because they were shipping so much directly to the BMW plant down south! Aftter that, the valvoline chemist I talked to told me G05 was absolutely a drop-in for G48.
Anyone interested to read up can do a search on glysantin and come up with some interesting stuff, some of which is out of date already, btw.
