Smog Help Please...

I have just recently bought a 1987 SPG. It has been lightly modified with a SPG9 (?) stage 2 apc, rising rate fuel pressure regulator, and a distributor advance diaphram (?). I took it to pass smog and was warned that it may run a little rich at idle and may need adjustment to pass. It seems to be the case. The car ran super clean in the higher rpm's but it runs too rich for idle. Can someone give me advice on tuning this to pass? I do know that timing is stock and has been the whole time. I feel it's the fuel regulator and could use some advice on fiddling with it. The guys at the smog shop said he could do it BUT i'd rather do it myself so I can learn and also so I can set it back when I'm done. The old owner also said he adjusted the air mass meter. Would this need to be adjusted also and if so how do I do it. I do notice an adjustment screw on it.
Thanks for any help. Bill
