Short circuit killing exterior and dash lights Posted by Baab [Email] (#1214) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Baab) on Sat, 8 Jun 2002 08:14:27 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Last night driving home I noticed that the dash illumination lights on my '86 900S were not working. Suspecting a fuse problem, I checked when I got home and found that fuse #18 was blown which affects the right-side running lights, the dash lights, and the license plate lights.
When I replace this fuse (10 amps) it blows violently as soon as the parking lights are switched on, indicating a dead short someplace in the circuit. I've checked the stuff that easy to get to (wiring at the front and rear lights and license plate lamp) and found nothing so far.
Obviously a short circuit can develop anyplace, but are there common or likely places that I should be looking at first? Any other diagnostic tips? (I'm not looking forward to the prospect of having to dig deep into the wiring harness, but that may be unavoidable.)
Until I get this fixed I can't drive the car at night! Fortunately the brake lights and turn signals are unaffected, so daylight operation is OK.
