Did you have these pits in the cylinder head right at the edge of the cylinder where the metal in the gasket is? I feel that it is a bit to close to the heat in the cylinder for using epoxi but if it was the same on yours I think I will go for that solution and save the skimming until next time. By the way, I had a very long look at the Townsend site. Extremely good indeed.
