87 900 Manual clutch question

I'm in the middle of reassembling my motor after a timing chain break. The lower crank gear was oval!
I am also replacing the clutch (it has 210,000 miles on it). I have a replacement clutch kit and wrestled with the saab finger tool to get the fingers out of the way. The new fingers are much tougher. What I was wondering is first - when I goto put the block back on the transmission, can I finagle putting the clutch, the slave and plate in place without trying to get that darn finger thing in place? Otherwords, can I do it without that tool? It seems like I can, but I just want some reassurances from the experts here.
The second part of the question is ... can anyone give me a summary of the to do items for replacing a clutch? I think there is a pilot bearing to replace and a throwout bearing. Any tips on removing the big plate with the gear teeth? (Can you tell I'm real knowledgeable about what I'm doing! As they say, "ignorance is bliss".
Thanks in advance for your guidance.
