starter or solenoid (only when hot?) Posted by JimBlake [Email] (#141) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JimBlake) on Thu, 13 Jun 2002 08:37:19 In Reply to: no start problem-recap, Quinn S. Kurz, Thu, 13 Jun 2002 01:59:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I looked at your earlier posts... Trouble is that the starter doesn't turn the engine. Right? NTC sensor, plugs, cap, rotor, are all useless if the starter can't spin the engine. The only confusing thing about your explanation is that the tachometer bounces. I 'think' that should only happen if the engine is turning over.
Did you check the power (big fat red wire) to the starter? Be careful about shorting that to ground, it's connected directly to the battery, & its not July 4th yet... ;-) I'd remove the negative battery cable first, so you don't hurt anything. Then unbolt the big fat red one at each point to check for a good connection. Fine emery paper & some grease for corrosion. There's also some kind of connection from the solenoid to the starter itself.
Then check the other end of the battery ground cable, bolted to the crossmember below the radiator. There's a bunch of ground wires there, including some for ignition. Make sure they all get clean & tight, otherwise you'll have additional troubles once you starter begins working.
This just eliminates the dumb cheap stuff. Since it only happens when warm, I really suspect a bad starter or its solenoid. Bad connections sould happen when its cold, too. I've never done a Saab starter, so I don't know if you can replace brushes when they're worn out??
