Total of 2.2 lbs 1.0 kg) of R-12
Left fan should come on when you jump the intermidiate high pressure switch
Switch on the radiator hose is closed at normal operating temperature.
Jumping the relay as you describe should pull the clutch
There is a high temp shutdown switch mounted on some compressors, inline with the clutch.
IMPORTANT NOTE: jumping pin 30 and 87 of the relay should make the right fan come on! Guess what I missed once.
Disconnect a line to add oil, or use an oil injector kit, one time use available at most parts stiores.
Did you find your leak? If not the expensive R-12 will come right back out. Check the hoses going to the compressor real carefull, espessially where the metal ends are crimped on!
Also, if the system has been exposed to air for any length of time its cheap insurance to replace the filter drier.
