Hello, Darkness, my old friend
Time to make decisions again
Your engine runs so sweetly
But the transmission is more than squeaky
All I know is that you need some surgery
Very quickly
To here the sounds of silence......
I have an '89 SAAB
I brought her down from Vermont
I got stuck in 5th and reverse
It's not the first time and I know it hurts
I'm simply torn for the love of my car
She takes me far
But no longer the sounds of silence
With 185 thou
Her wheel bearing does now growl
I gave her new CV's
Inner and outer from the spring
But the tranny has me worrying
Shall I keep her or should I drive her off the bridge
Into the Potomac Fringe
Sinking in the sound of silence...
I suppose it's a question we all must face with few duckets in the piggy bank. This is the second time in a week I've stopped and found myself only able to shift into fifth and reverse (no neutral at all). I know I can get inside the side of the tranny tomorrow and fix her, but, then, for how long will she last. Thankfully this time I was pulling into the driveway, angling her out of the way of the massive construction rigs that will reawaken tomorrow morning (after I've watched the US play Mexico). Last week, she got the cramp on my way to my friend's mother's funeral..not quite so timely. And, even with AAA, it cost me $30 to tow her back to the city from the woods of Falls Church.
I love her.
Her red paint, though faded and losing the clearcoat, strikes me more solidly than the sticky 85 degree weather as I walk out the door in the morning or a bunch of skinheads at a Reverand Horton Heat Show. Still, I'm confused as to how I should proceed. How much would a new tranny cost (w/installation)? Better to replace engine and tranny simultaneously? Are there other options? I did pull the reverse fork switch via that other cool website...I'm thinking I'll throw a roll of duct tape in there, close the tranny back up and hope for the best. Either that or hijack the other red 900S down the street. I'll try a search on 'hotwiring.' Oh great Well of SAAB Knowledge, cry back to me far and wide!!!!!!!!
Thank you all for your concern and advise...
Maybe Santa will bring me a new SAAB in the morning, I'll be sure to check my mailbox for a set of keys :-D
