yesterday i undertook cleaning out my engine bay a bit. transmission and lower engine was covered in oily gook from the battery side, and i wanted to rule out oil leakage. plus it was just dirty and nasty in general. I also took advantage of the opportunity to pull the battery and clean the terminals with baking soda.

anyhow, i pulled the battery and cleaned. sat it on the side. Then i got a hose and a brush and washed the engine down then scrubbed as much of it as i could reach with a scrubbrush and a tooth brush. sprayed down that lower part and top of skid plate etc with degreaser and cleaned it up a bit. also played "whats that part" to try to get to know things better.

I pulled the vacuum hoses on the intake manifold (one connected to FPR, the other to i forget what), and popped them back in.

put the battery back.

when i started up this morning it felt like i was missing a cylinder or something. the idle was crazy rough, up to 1k, down to 500, jumping all over. when i accelerated (TRIED to accelerate) the car sounded like a lawnmower, pth-pth-pth-pth-pth-pth-pth-pth. when i got to higher rpms it didnt do it so much. after about 20 mins of driving, it finally settled down, after me being very worried.

is this a result of the intake having to return itself to operating vacuum, or maybe the pulled batter reset some electrical part of the ignition system? it should have been totally dry, so water not a factor i think ...

it seems to be ok now, so im not too worried, id just really like to know what happened to better understand whats going on under there.

thanks!
dave
