The AIC is the Automatic Idle Control.
I am trying to remember, (but i dont think i ever knew, so i doubt i will remember :P), but i think in 88 there is an AIC, and also some other stuff that controls the idle (dashpot or something?).
if you want to find the AIC, its pretty easy. On the opposite side of the car from the battery (drivers side) sits your air filter. if your not sure what it looks like, its a big box with a "snorkel" on top, towards the front of the engine bay. This thing is attached by a big plastic hose to the AMM (Air Mass Meter) and then to the intake manifold, which is a big cast iron thing that the fuel injectors plug into.
anyhow, there will be hoses coming out of the AMM and the tube connecting it to the air filter box. two of these hoses are a bypass of the AMM (i think a bypass) which will lead out to the AIC and back again. The aic itself is mounted towards teh front of the engine valve cover at the front end of the fuel rail (which is a metal tube that feeds the fuel injectors).
if you dont know what all those things are, dont worry. you'll be able to figure out enough of them by thinking "what would a fuel rail look like?" and stuff like that.
if you are serious about repairing this car yourself, i highly reccommend that you get yourself a bentley manual. I cant do without it, its the only thing standing between me and total cluelessness regarding my car :)
good luck, and hopefully someone else with a clue will weigh in with more help. and how exactly to clean the AIC. Bentley will have a section on adjusting idle and AIC info and such.
