It may be on its way out, but just keep tabs on it. When it goes, the most cost effective solution may be to get a used tranny from a later model wrecked C900 (89+). What lube are you using in the tranny? A balky 1st and second may be synchros from previous owner abuse. Try to let it select the gear instead of putting it in gear. Kind of a Zen shifting ritual. Shift with teh tips of your fingers. no excessive force. Is the whine louder in 4th or 5th? These all have a slight chain whine as a matter of fact. I just caution you to not look for a problem that may not be there. My personal preference would to pass on teh cam. I have tried it before and you get more HP through higher revs, but it reduces tourque at the bottom end. This results in a 'less satisfying' drive around town, higher clutch wear, etc. I have no personal info about 8V Saab cams, but keep in mind that the Saab folk did a pretty good job on the engine to start with. If you want more performance and do not want to spend a lot of money, I would keep an eye out for a C900 turbo 8V or 16V either as a different car or a powertrain swap.
