Hi all,
I've had pretty good luck with my SAAB (and thus have been absent from this BB for a while).
But today, as I pulled into my parking lot at work, I heard a terrible squealing noise and smelled a hot-electrical type odor. I immediately popped the hood and saw the cooling fan (pass. side) running, as normal. The abnormal noise was VERY loud. I quickly unplugged the fan wires and both fan and noise stopped.
I didn't want heat to build up, so I waited a few seconds and gingerly attempted to reconnect the wiring. When I did so, I noticed that the white plastic (motor?) housing which the wires plug into on the fan motor shifts fore and aft some 1/8" or so. I didn't have time to look at it any more just then (late to work, I was), but the fan DID run OK after replugging (noiseless). I'm worried about driving it home (a bit).
The only other thing I have to add to this info is that the cooling fan had been rather loud lately (a rattling noise, not today's squeal).
Are my fan motor's bearings going bad? Will it start a fire if I drive it much? (I do have a spare '84 with both cooling fans good to try and swap out later.) Any suggestions or light shed on this will be greatly appreciated.
