My personal experience is that the '89 base or S (16V LH 2.4/EZK) can be difficult. I would first check that it has a remanufactured ECU. The '89 is notorious for needing a new ECU after it quits turning on the fuel pump relay. If the ECU is reman or out of a '90, it should be a good starting point. Get the number off of it and we can tell where it came from. A reman AMM, if necessary, is available from sponsors for a reasonable price (~200). There is no 'AMM code' per se. the system will indicate where it is not operating within parameters and it is up to the tech to determine what needs to be replaced. The codes which are determined to be 'amm codes' can be caused by a bad ground, improperly operating O2 sensor, dirty connections, etc. The '89 I am working on has a bad ECU and the '90 I have in it does not 'run right' with certain AMMs. I am still working on it. If I were looking at one, an '89 would be worth less than an '88 with similar mileage. I'd say 4-800 less.
