whatever company told you that rebuilt engines are not safe, is off their rocker. if you have the time, get the used engine. get whichever one is cheapest that didn't fail catastrophically. pull everything apart, get cyliders machined, linebore for crank bearings, head work, etc. then you will have a new engine when reassembled. used engines that are rebuilt properly are just fine. it's when you randomly grab a used engine and throw it in, then you may have problems. i am currently rebuilding my second engine. block and head were used, but pistons, valves, bearings, etc. are new. it lasted for over 12k miles and created over 250 at the crank (213whp). while 12k miles seems short, the cam gear caused the failure, which was an aftermarket adjustable gear. all stock components ran well and strong. but, that's just what i think...
