Air conditioning repair recommendations

My A/C does not work. My theory is that a fluid recharge would resolve this issue. Since a recharge is necessary, I was thinking I would do a R134A conversion in the process. I have run into a few problems, however. There is some conflicting information in my searches, hence the post.
I have a R134a conversion kit from Wal Mart. Fluid/oil in canisters, conversion nipples, and such.
The receiver/drier does need a replacement for a conversion. Where is a good place to buy one for a good price?
Do the hoses need to be replaced in a conversion? I called a local shop regarding the cost of a receiver/drier, and had to listen to a rant. They claimed that the hoses require replacement due to R134a being held under higher pressure. If so, where can I get new hoses for a good price?
Is there any easy/viable way to drain the remaining oil/coolant out of the system in a DIY environment?
Besides the compressor, hoses, etc, are there any areas I could diagnose for faults before attempting a re-charge?
Any additional tips would be appreciated.
Thanks!
