Cooling System Problems...

I have an '88 900S. About a week ago I developed a pin-hole leak on the small elbow hose on the front side of the engine. I was able to drive my short distane to work with the hose taped up (awaiting the arrival of the new hose). Today coming home the temp kept rising and I wound up having to pull over with an over-heated engine. Tank was dry. After cooling down, roadside assistance filled me up with water to get home. By the time I got home I was nearly overheating again. The good news is the new hose was at my house when I arrived home.
I drained the system, changed the hose and re-filled with the Saab coolant and water. Drove around for about 15 minutes to make sure all was well...well, it wasn't. Car kept heating up, when I got home, expansion tank was overfull and oozing aroung the cap and hose. This was a surprise since I didn't think I'd even put enough coolant in!
Trying to think of other causes. Interesting thing is that as hot as the car got both times, the radiator fans never kicked on. I tested the fans and they are operational. Any thoughts on what might be causing my overheating issues? Thermostat? Radiator? Any help or thoughts would be most appreciated. Thanks.
