Anyone ever see such a thing? cure besides replacement?
symptoms:
AC works great for while, 45 minutes or so, temp such that I need to turn down to minimum. From then on, if AC compressor is shut off with engine running at road speed the AC blows warm. I tested everything; low pressure switch, evap temp switch, overheat switch, time delay relay, etc. Today I got around to purchasing a gauge set. All pressures normal & sight glass clear. I ended up driving around for an hour with the gauges connected and hanging in the cabin, as well as voltmeter connected to the compressor clutch wire.
Everything seemed to work fine except that after a quick burst at WOT the AC started blowing hot, the pressures started heading to normal "hot rest" readings but there was power to the compressor clutch. Had to stop for a light, AC started working again. Hmmmm.
Got back home turned AC on at idle, car still hot, rev'ed engine to 2000, turned AC off, then back on. There came a raspy noise from the compressor, and a quick look confirmed that the outer clutch assembly wasn't turning. Let the engine drop to idle & the clutch locked back up like it's supposed to.
diagnosis: AC clutch slips when hot ONLY if re-engaged with engine at higher RPM.
