There are probably other tests, but here's the one I know:
My mom has a '90 and I got a Bentley 16V book fairly recently. I read that you can run the car (must go above 3000 RPM, briefly), I think the car may have to be brought up to operating temperature, but then you have air cleaner-to-AMM elbow diconnected and look into the inlet side while a friend turns engine OFF. AMM's hot-wire does a burn-off function, if operating properly 4 seconds (20-30 sec. on some models) AFTER shut off.
That burn-off is to remove crud from AMM wire, which would otherwise impede wire's sensitivity to passing air. If the wire doesn't glow, your AMM's hot wire may be broken. (Faulty ECU is a--less likely--possibility.)
Hope this helps! (I'm no mechanic, just a lowly DIYer, so wait before acting on this until some SAAB guru chimes in.)
