Cunningham accurately describes the procedure for getting the long mounting bolt out. However, KB88900Tis correct when he says that the voltage regulator/brush unit can be removed without taking the alternator out.
The usual culprits when the alternator won't charge are either worn brushes (replace without removing the alternator) or one of the wires leading to the alternator has broken. Vibration can cause the wires to break inside the insulation, usually at the connection. If a wire breaks, the ALT light probably won't come on when turn on the ignition.
Check for bad wires first (wiggle/pull the wires to see if one is damaged). If the wires are good, replace the voltage regulator/brush unit.
This assumes that the battery is good and the terminals aren't corroded, etc.
