My '84 900T 5sp 200k has developed a different sound in the last year or so, and I'm curious if any 8-valve guys have an opinion if it's a problem.

Car makes plenty of boost w/G6 APC and retrofit intercooler. Checked all the pipes and connectors, and none seem to be cracked or leaking.
If the turbo bearings are not shot, and the blades not broken, what else goes wrong with an old turbo (original turbo) to cause such a whistle? Maybe a cracked housing?

The other problem (maybe related)is a backfire under high boost. Car has been checked from air filter to tailpipe by indie with no luck. The indie had another '84 and swapped practically every CIS and ingition component looking for the cause. Their best guess is an overly rich mixture at high boost, which seems wierd since all the readings are normal. The car gets about 16 MPG so maybe it is a rich condition somehow. The car has all silicone vacuum lines, so I don't think a vacuum leak is the problem. No fluids in the wrong place to indicate head gasket is leaking. Injectors are clean (new seals), new grommets on the intake manifold. Leakdown test was not great, but not terminal. It's a real mystery. This has been going on for over a year but I can't give up without finding out what's wrong.
