I had this problem with my 82T restoration project bought two decembers ago. Two things were contributing. One was the rubber boot seal around the tranny shift rod. When I finally replaced that boot with a good one just last month, I also discovered that the insulation padding that is suppossed to lay under the shift rod within the car interior (that which runs from the shift console through the firewall) was laying on top of it. This allowed a clear channel for heat from the catalytic convertor to build and then flow through the entire shift and ignition console and out along the sides into the car interior. Additional hot air from the engine compartment flowing through the ruptured rubber boot only added to that hot zone. One symptom was the ignition key would frequently get very hot. Since replacing the boot and putting the insulation back in it's proper position, the car interior has not been nearly as hot as before. The ignition key also doesn't become hot.
