I had a wheel bearing make a noise like driving on big knobby tires. Mine didn't change when I turned, so it's POSSIBLE for it to still be a wheel bearing.
I checked by turning, and when it didn't change I 'knew' it wasn't a wheel bearing. Happened when I bought new snow tires, & I spent all winter grumbling about how Blizzaks really sucked compared to the quiet Pirellis I had the year before. But when I put the summer tires back on, the noise was still there! It was a wheel bearing.
Spin the wheels off the ground & listen, like Greg says. Mine was much easier to feel the bad bearing with the wheels & brakes removed.
