The seat back should have the same wire grid and spring set-up as the new kit.The grid is slightly different in dimensions and the springs but are a guage lighter. Shouldn't be broken like the fabric seat bottom. The wire and springs can get weak over time however. From my experience on my 4 cars the back is probably mushy from the foam breaking down. On my 87T I had the same sensation with the seat back. I got back foam from the pass. seat on a clean junker and it firmed up the driver's seat back considerably.
