power lock "ECU" testing, need help

i have intermittent power locks, and have had the same problem since I obtained my car (about 2 years).
today i finally decided to go and test the "ecu" (guess its really more of a glorified relay from what ive heard), and see what the deal is.
i pulled the ventilation duct down out of the way, popped the bracket for the ecu off, and pulled the wire harness.
following the sheet from townsend, i tried jumping the green/white and yellow pins to the black pin. this should lock/unlock the car. i got nothing for this test (and draw no voltage across these pins either).
pin 4 is supposed to be always live, and i do get a current (12.5 v) across this to the ground, which is a start i suppose.
my bentley says check for current across pins 7 and 8 to ground with the key in the door to either locked or unlocked. I dont draw any current here either.
does anyone who is more familiar with this system have any suggestions? bentley is quite unhelpful, and townsends sheet doesnt seem to have any course of action for when the pin 2/3 to ground jumps dont work.
um, i had a mechanic misdiagnose the problem as a bad motor in the drivers door, so this was replaced about a year ago. symptoms did not go away. im almost certain its not the motors. when its warm out, sometimes the locks work. most of the time they dont.
thanks for any help,
dave
