$3000 is not really a bad price considering red is the most expensive color out there. Is a basecoat/clearcoat system going to be used? I just had a car painted and my cost for the paint(viggen blue) and clear alone was nearly $600. Add to that the primers and sealers and I nearly spent $1000 for materials.
Replacing the door trim?...Does that mean the door jambs will be repainted as well as under the deck lid and under the hood also? Alot of extra work is involved doing that..Is the body in need of major work or is it just minor dings and surface rust?
I've seen cars with bumpers painted the color of the car and I would say considering yours is red it might look nice. As far as the paint sticking, a flex agent is added to the paint to promote adhesion, so I wouldn't worry about it pealing off. Any reputable shop knows this, but I'd ask if they will use just to make sure.
A good friend of mine who owned a body shop 30 years ago used to paint cars for $49.95, and make good money. Those days are long gone.
