Overtightening the belts is hard on bearings in ALL the belt-driven accessories. The water pump is probably most sensitive of all, because the bearings are so close to each other.
The alternator bearings are probably a good 4 or 5 inches apart from each other, and they're bigger (stronger) bearings too.
If you don't have a belt tension gauge, keep the belts a bit loose, then if the belt squeals tighten it a bit. There's less damage that way.
