hey, i also have a 91' 900S. I had the same situation you have, i didnt like it too much esspecialy with how fragile our headgaskets are. What i did to solve it was order a 82degree thermostat(you can easily put this in your self) and unplug my A/C. unplugging the A/C makes the ac button basicly a switch to turn on both radiator fans. I never use my a/c because it robs too much power and makes for some unpredictable ventures into traffic.

typical old situation:
i would be driving down the road 40-55mph and the temp would be halfway or just a tad above. i'd get to a stoplight and the temp would climb to nearly the red and then the fan would kick on and SLOWLY bring the temp to 3/4ths and by then i was on my way again and back to a half on the guage. this would almost always be the case.

New situation after disconnecting A/C and using 82deg ts
drive down road 40-55 with coolant temp at alittle over 1/3rd. get to stop light and temp goes to 1/2 and stays there for a long time...on really hot days or really long lights....or if i had just been passing some hondas the temp will approach over one half....I hit the A/c switch and both fans create a hurricane under the hood and the temp almost watchably falls to 1/3rd and is pinned there untill i shut off the switch.

Im just a car guy and enjoy controlling any and all aspects of the car manually....hence the 'idiotic' lack of ac and the 5 speed manual transmission. You or anyone else can replicate my fan situation in a more civilized manner by applying townsends fan really modification and installing an 82 degree fan switch.

goodluck
