SRS Warning Light

I brought my '90 in to a dealer because my independent did not have the proper scan equipment to troubleshoot my car's SRS flashing light. The dealer was having trouble diagnosing the problem because there were many codes coming up in the ECU. After two days, the dealer cleared the codes out and is giving the car back to me (with a $100 tag for checking out). Should the problem resurface, I could be looking at replacing both front sensors and their wiring harness for $650. The car is 12 years old, has 56,000 miles, never been hit, and has been a garage queen all of its life. What would make these sensors go bad...water, humidity? I don't know, maybe the problem was caused by other codes and the SRS was tripped accidently and may not occur again. Does this sound legimate?
For the record, the clockspring was replaced in the steering wheel last summer when my horns would not operate, so, I'm shying away from thinking that would be the problem. Some of the past posts tell of mechanics quickly clearing the fault code/SRS light and some tell of a relatively inexpensive dealer fix (@ $150 or so). The $650 made me jump. Thoughts?
